This thesis also situates Trimble’s music within the context of British and Irish genres. Apart from providing the first lengthy scholarly study of Trimble, this thesis addresses the larger issues that relate to the study of her life and music, including the significance of commissioning, her awareness of her Irish heritage, the role of gender in her compositional output, and the reception of her music in both Britain and Ireland. Her distinctive style is characterised by an Irish idiom, while also indebted to impressionism and neo-classicism on occasion. Despite this diversity, there is a consistency of style evident in Trimble’s music from her earliest compositions to her last. Among her works are music for two pianos, individual songs, a song cycle, a piano trio, a suite for strings, a wind quintet, a rhapsody for brass band, incidental music for film, orchestral arrangements of Ulster Airs and an opera for television. ![]() Joan Trimble’s compositional output, though limited in quantity, is remarkably diverse in genre.
